Martin Bader has won the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) London, after defeating a field of 397 players on his way to capturing the title, and claiming the £56,000 ($84,235) first place prize.
The £1,070 buy-in main event attracted a star-studded line-up of pros, including Marvin Rettenmaier who made it down to the last three tables before hs A-J shove got picked off by eventual winner Martin Bader holding pocket sevens. A couple of hours later, Bader (A-K) bounced Ashley Thompson (A-7) from the competition in 10th to get the final table underway.
At this stage, Bader was lying 3rd overall in chips and soon added further to his stack after being dealt K-Q and eliminating Chiraag Thanki (A-9) from the tournament in 7th for £13,100.
After Jamie Roberts (K-Q) was dispatched to the rail by Marc Wrigh (A-Q) in 6th (£16,670), the remaining players then agreed to guarantee themselves £45,000 a piece and earmark the rest of the prize pool worth £38,630 to the eventual winner.
Martin Bader (K-Q) subsequently got lucky to eliminate Marc Wright (A-Q) in 5th and continuing his run knocked Jeff Duval from the tournament in 4th. Next, David Barraclough (A-3) called Paul Alterman’s open-shove with Qh-9h and despite the 10d-8h-3h flop Alterman’s hand failed to improve and so he exited in 3rd, thus heralding in the heads-up phase of the competition.
As heads-up got underway, Barraclough held a massive 6 to 1 chip advantage but after agreeing another deal, Bader played aggressively and eventually soared to a 4 to 1 chip lead helped by a pot in which he held 10-2 on a 10-10-3 board against the A-K of his opponent. A little later, Barraclough moved all-in with K-5 and after being called by Bader with A-9, had to settle for a runner-up finish, while Martin Bader was crowned the 2013 GUKPT London champion.
The final table results were as follows:
1: Martin Bader — £56,000
2: David Barraclough — £62,000
3: Paul Alterman — £50,000
4: Jeff Duval — £50,000
5: Marc Wright — £45,000
6: Jamie Roberts — £16,670
7: Chiraag Thanki — £13,100
8: Antonio Millan — £9,530
9: Sin Melin — £7,150
